Traveling solo can prove to be one of the most rewarding and unique experiences in a person’s life. You get a new feeling of independence when you explore a place all by yourself. Starting from the place you want to go up to the things you wish to do, you get to decide the entire schedule on your own. Though all of this seems a lot exciting, there are some mistakes which solo travelers should avoid in order to have the safest and best trip possible:

  • Being too ambitious in the beginning/end of the trip:

You would obviously expect things to be smooth on the first and final nights of your trip. You are most tired when you arrive at the place due to the journey and luggage and most tensed as you leave the place when trying to catch the flight or train on time. Thus, during such times, you need to reel in your ambition and be easy on yourself. You can make reservations at a hotel located near the railway station or airport during such nights or hire a cab instead of public transport to avoid the risk of missing your train or flight.

  • Improper planning for accommodation:

When traveling alone, a bit of common advice that most people will give you is to stay in a communal living premise or a hostel as this help make new companions easily and quickly. Though these are great options, hotels also make a nice accommodation choice because of the safety and comfort they offer. Your choice of accommodation would highly depend on the kind of preference you have. If you need safety and comfort then choose a hotel and if you are looking for companionship then think of hostels or other options. A wrong choice of lodging can ruin your entire trip so make sure you choose the right one.

  • Not doing proper research on local customs:

Before you begin your trip to the place, it is important to perform research on its local customs so that you can pack items accordingly. Religious sites like churches and mosques are obviously the places where you have to dress a little reservedly. However, there may be some other unexpected places where such kind of dressing will be required as well. So, if you happen to visit such places wearing shorts or cropped tops, the locals who are highly religious may look down upon you. Hence, it’s best that you have knowledge about the local culture and the other places you plan on visiting there beforehand.

  • Eating too much of local street food:

Eating too much of the local street food of the place you are visiting solo can cause some serious health issues such as food poisoning or indigestion. This generally applies to poultry items as these are not so easy to digest if not cooked hygienically and properly. Though you will find the local cuisine to be extremely affordable, it would be best to avoid getting tempted to eating too much of it and splurge at reputable restaurants and hotels instead. There is nothing worse than falling sick when there will be no one to take care of you.

  • Not taking help when needed:

Traveling alone requires some courage. In order to make the most of your trip, you need to surpass shyness and learn how to ask the locals for help when needed. For instance, if you are in a situation where you’re being harassed, don’t hesitate or get afraid to ask help from the locals. More often than not, locals are kind and generous and are up to help tourists whenever the need arises.

  • Avoiding your own company:

Most of the solo travelers focus on meeting and talking to other folks and locals in the place and forget to enjoy their own company. Remember, you decided to go on a trip alone after all for a reason. There are people who yearn to have a moment by themselves when traveling in large groups. But luckily, this is not the scenario for you so enjoy and make the most of your time alone.

  • Not having a backup plan:

It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in general, however, it is important to have a much better Plan B when traveling solo. Informing someone reliable about the place you are visiting, the plans you have made and your whereabouts can be extremely helpful. In fact, social media and smartphones have made it much easy to keep your loved ones informed that you are safe and fine.

These are some of the things you need to avoid and keep in mind when traveling alone. Just remember to act smart and stay safe to have a fun experience during the trip.
